Sergeant First Class Richard Emmerling is the senior enlisted for the 404th Army Field Support Battalion – Charleston.
He joined the U.S. Army in August 2000 where his first duty station at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, with the 2nd Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment, as a wheeled vehicle mechanic in Aviation (Kiowa) Squadron. During his time at Fort Campbell, SFC Emmerling was deployed to Camp Bondsteel, Kosovo, in 2001 and Iraq during the invasion of 2003. He was later assigned to Baumholder, Germany, with the 1st Battalion, 94th Field Artillery Regiment, where he served as a wheeled vehicle mechanic in a multiple launch rocket system track vehicle unit. During this assignment, SFC Emmerling served as the motor sergeant for two separate operations: Operation Proof of Principle in Iraq and a partnership training operation with the Romanian Army. His next assignment was in Fort Riley, Kansas, serving as a shop foreman for a motor pool in the Division Headquarters, Headquarters Battalion. He was deployed to Iraq during the transition to Operation New Dawn where he served as a Force Protection noncommissioned officer in charge and contracting officer representative in Iraq. He then served as a recruiter in Middletown New York. At his next duty station he served as a 501st Brigade Support Battalion rear deployment platoon sergeant at Fort Bliss, Texas. During this time he achieved his Master Fitness Trainer Badge and began developing a unit level reconditioning program. Following his assignment at Fort Bliss, SFC Emmerling was assigned to the 13th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, Fort Lewis, Washington, where he served in three different companies: 523rd Truck Company, Headquarters & Headquarters Company, 13th Transportation Battalion; and 542nd Support Maintenance Company. The majority of his time was spent as an S-3 operations NCO producing the entirety of battalion level operations orders for nine companies within the battalion. During this time he also served as the battalion master fitness trainer developing. While in HHC he also served as an advanced marksmanship instructor. SFC Emmerling volunteered to deploy with the 542nd Maintenance Company where he was assigned to support 5th Special Forces Group Support Battalion on the border of Jordan/Syria ISO Task Force Jordan as the operations’ NCOIC for a logistics node supporting operations within Syria.
SFC Emmerling’s military education includes the Senior Leaders Course, the Sling Load Inspector, the Master Fitness Course, the Army Recruiter, the Advanced Marksmanship Instructor Course, and the U.S. Army Air Assault Course.
SFC Emmerling’s awards and decorations include two Meritorious Service Medals, six Army Commendation Medals, five Army Achievement Medals, the Iraqi Campaign Medal (4 Stars), the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Kosovo Campaign Medal, the U.S. Army Recruiter Badge, the Master Fitness Trainer Badge, and the U.S. Army Air Assault Badge.
SFC Emmerling is married and has one son.
