COL John F. Taylor Jr.


Colonel John Taylor serves as commander of the 279th Army Field Support Brigade in Huntsville, Alabama, a position he has held since 4 February 2018.
Colonel Taylor joined the Alabama National Guard in January 1982 as a Private with the 781st Transportation Company. After serving eight years, he attended and received his commission from the Alabama Military Academy Officer Candidate School as a Second Lieutenant, 30 June 1990.

Upon receiving his commission, COL Taylor was assigned to the 946th Supply Company, Reform, Alabama. His 946th Supply Company assignments include the Platoon Leader, Supply Operations Officer, and Detachment Commander. He served within the 946th Supply Company for over four years.
COL Taylor’s consecutive officer assignments include the Supply Management Officer, 135th Supply and Service Battalion 1995-1996, Company Commander, 1135th Quartermaster Company 1996, Company Commander, 3058th Maintenance Company 1996-1998, S-4 Officer, 731st Maintenance Battalion 1998-2000, Logistics Operations Officer, Detachment 1, 200th Materiel Management Center 2000-2004, Maintenance Management Officer, Supply and Service Officer, Operations Officer, Plans Officer, Chief, 167th Theater Sustainment Command 2004-2010, Battalion Commander, 731st Combat Sustainment Support Battalion 2010-2012, Deputy Commander, 122nd Troop Support Command, 2012-2014, Plans Officer, 135th Expeditionary Sustainment Command 2014-2016, and Distribution Management Center Chief, 167th Theater Sustainment Command 2016-2017.

COL Taylor deployed as the Logistics Operations Officer of the Detachment 1, 200th Materiel Management Center in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) Germany/Turkey/Iraq 2003. In addition, he has been activated and deployed for some major Alabama National Guard Domestic Support of Civil Authorities (DSCA) operations since 2005.

COL Taylor is a graduate of the Quartermaster Officer Basic Course, Quartermaster and Ordnance Officer Advanced Courses, Combined Arms and Services Staff School, Command and General Staff Officer Course, Support Operations Course (Distant Learning), Sustainment Pre-Command Course, and the US Army War College. He is a graduate of Troy State University - Montgomery (BS), Touro University International (MBA), and the US Army War College (MS).

COL Taylor’s awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (with 3 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Commendation Medal (with 3 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Achievement Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal (with 1 Silver Oak Leaf Cluster and 4 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters), National Defense Service Medal (with Bronze Service Star), Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal (with Bronze Service Star), Armed Forces Reserve Medal (with Gold Hourglass and "M" device), Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Army Reserve Components Overseas Training Ribbon (with Numeral 5), Alabama Commendation Medal, Alabama Veterans Service Medal (with 4 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters), Alabama National Emergency Service Medal (with “9-11” Clasp), Alabama Faithful Service Medal (with 1 Silver St. Andrews Cross and 4 Bronze St. Andrews Crosses), and Alabama Active Duty Basic Training Ribbon.
