Sergeant Major

Sergeant Major Russell S. Sabens assumed the duties as the Senior Enlisted Advisor of the Army Field Support Battalion - Afghanistan in July 2019. He was born in Burlington, VT. He entered the Vermont Army National Guard, C Battery, 1\86th Field Artillery Battalion (155mm (SP) in February of 1980. Upon completing One Station Unit Training at Ft. Dix, NJ, he was awarded the MOS 63B (Power Generation Light Wheel Vehicle Mechanic, now 91B).  

After returning to Vermont from Ft Dix, NJ, SGM Sabens was assigned to the maintenance section in C Btry. In November 1980, he reclassified to 13B Cannon Crewman. In 1986 he reclassified to 13E Fire Direction Specialist. In 1989 he became a Senior Fire Direction NCO, and in 1991 he became the Chief Fire Direction Computer for C Btry. In 1994 was assigned to HHB 1\86 FA BN as the Battalion Chief Fire Direction Computer. In 1996 - 2004 he was reassigned back to C Btry as a Gunnery\PLT Sergeant. While assigned to that position, he performed two tours with the Vermont National Guard Counter Drug Program conducting counter-drug operations. From October 1st 2001 - June 2002 he was called to active duty for airport security operations (ISO ONE). In August 2004 after nearly 25 years of service in the Vermont Army National Guard, SGM Sabens made a career change and transferred to the U.S. Army Reserve, Detachment 3, 2200th Military Intelligence Group (MIG). He attended the four month resident (Intelligence Specialist) course in Ft Huachuca, AZ and was awarded the 35F MOS. From December 2005 - June 2006, he performed a CO-TTAD tour in support of ONE, OEF, OIF, in the Operations cell at the National Ground Intelligence Center (NGIC), Charlottesville, VA. SGM Sabens mobilized for his first combat tour in September 2006 - December 2007 where he was assigned as the 1SG of the Military Intelligence Company of the Joint Interrogation Facility, Bagram, Afghanistan. From May 2009 - May 2010 he performed a CO-ADOS tour as the Biometrics NCOIC in the Biometrics Intelligence Program (BIP) at the National Ground Intelligence Center in Charlottesville, VA. In August and September of 2010 he performed a tour at Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) as a Cover Technician. In August 2012 he mobilized to ISAF HQ, Kabul, AF J2X USFOR-A Senior Enlisted Advisor. In January 2013 he was assigned as a Senior Intelligence Sergeant USARE CENTCOM J2/JT DET 1 Ft Devens, MA. In December 2013 he was assigned as Chief Instructor/Writer 6th/98 MI BN, Ft Devens, MA. In August 2017 he was assigned as Acting Command Sergeant Major 826th MI BN INTG Ft Devens, MA. In February he was assigned as the Senior Enlisted advisor USARE CENTCOM J2 DET 1, Ft Devens, MA. In May 2019 he was assigned to his current position as the Battalion Sergeant Major/SEA AFSBn-AFG, BAF.

His military education includes the Primary Leadership Development Course, Basic Non‐Commissioned Officer Course, Advanced Non‐Commissioned Officer Course, First Sergeant Course, and the resident United States Army Sergeants Major Academy, Class 65. His military schooling includes 91B Power Generation Light Wheel Vehicle Mechanic, Battle Focused Instructor Training Course, Initial Fire Support Automated System (IFSAS) SME Course, Advanced Field Artillery Targeting and Direction System (AFATDS) SME Course, Light Forward Entry Device (LFED) SME Course, Information Operations 101, Battle Focused Instructor Training Course, Small Group Leader Course, Combat Lifesaver Course, 35F Intelligence Analyst Course, Open Source Research & Analysis Course.

SGM Sabens civilian occupation is a Fleet Administrator for Saint Michael’s College located in Colchester, VT. 

He is married and they have three children and five grandchildren.
