LTC John M Ruths


Lieutenant Colonel John M. Ruths took command of the AFSB-NEA June 2018. LTC Ruths hails from Faribault, Minnesota. He joined the U.S. Army August 1989 and served as an enlisted Soldier for 10-1/2 years before receiving his commission from Officer Candidate School (OCS) December 1999. 

After OCS and the Ordnance Officer Basic Course, LTC Ruths served in the 64th Forward Support Battalion as a Maintenance Platoon Leader, Company Executive Officer, and Shop Officer. In April 2003, he deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom with his unit and departed for the Republic of Korea September 2003. In the Republic of Korea, LTC Ruths served as the Support Operations Maintenance Officer and Supply and Services Officer with the 23rd Area Support Group at Camp Humphreys. In October 2004 he moved to Camp Casey and stood up E Forward Support Company, 302nd Brigade Support Battalion. After two years in command, LTC Ruths attended the Combined Logistics Captains’ Career Course at Fort Lee, Virginia and Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, graduating in July 2007. Immediately following this, he attended the Combat Advisor Course followed by a deployment to FOB Lightning, Afghanistan, serving as the J4 for Afghanistan Regional Security Integration Command-East. In November 2008, he moved to Fort Carson Colorado where he served as the S3 for the 68th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion and eventually deployed to FOB Leatherneck, Afghanistan. During the deployment, LTC Ruths moved to the 43rd Sustainment Brigade at Kandahar Airfield as the Chief of Plans. After redeployment to Fort Carson, he transferred to the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division as the Brigade S4. Deploying to FOB Fenty, Afghanistan in March 2012, he took over as the Executive Officer of the 704th Brigade Support Battalion and FOB Mayor. Upon redeployment, LTC Ruths stayed on as the Battalion Executive Officer, deploying to Afghanistan again in February 2014. Upon redeployment, he moved to Egypt where he served as a Security Cooperation Officer and Land Forces Branch Chief with the US Embassy in Cairo. In April 2016, LTC Ruths moved to Fort Knox, Kentucky where he served as an Assignment Officer for two years before this most recent move to the Republic of Korea. 

LTC Ruths’ awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, the Presidential Unit Citation, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Valorous Unit Awards, Meritorious Unit Citation, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, the NATO Medal, Combat Action Badge, Expert Infantry Badge, Parachutist Badge, and the Air Force Security Forces Skill Badge. 

LTC Ruths is married and they have one child.
