Lieutenant Colonel Joseph W. Nalli assumed command of Army Field Support Battalion-Southwest Asia June 2023.
LTC Nalli was commissioned into active duty through the Army Reserve Officer Training Corp at Kent State University as an Ordnance officer, branch detailed Armor. Completing Armor Officers Basic Course at Fort Knox, Kentucky, in 2005, he was assigned to 4th Squadron, 2nd Cavalry Regiment, later reflagged to 2nd Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, at Fort Lewis, now Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington. There he served as scout platoon leader and assistant S-4 (Logistics), where he deployed for 15 months in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom during the 2007-2008 surge.
Following redeployment, LTC Nalli attended the Combined Logistics Captains Career Course at Fort Lee (known as Fort Gregg-Adams since 2023), Virginia. He was next assigned in 2009 to the 4th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, in support of the Defense Support of Civil Authorities mission, Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear substances and Explosives Consequence Management Response Force. There he served as the Support Operations Maintenance officer, assistant battalion S-3 (Operations) and Field Maintenance company commander. LTC Nalli was reassigned back to Fort Knox as an Active Component/Reserve Component observer/controller-trainer assigned to 4th Cavalry Brigade, First Army East serving as a Battalion S-4 O/C-T and assistant brigade S-4. He was selected for Worldwide Individual Augmentation System tasking assigned to NATO Special Operations Command-Afghanistan/Special Operations Joint Task Force-AFG, where he served as the Joint Logistics Operation Center Support Operations officer. Following redeployment, he was assigned as the brigade S-4 before departing to attend the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, in June 2015. Following CGSC, LTC Nalli was assigned to Fort Campbell, Kentucky, where he served as the Brigade Logistics Support Team chief to 3rd Brigade (Rakkasan), 101st Division (Air Assault) deploying to Kandahar, Afghanistan, with the Rakkasans in support of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel/Resolute Support. Following the nine-month deployment, he was selected to serve as the Support Operations officer for the Rakkasans, then as the executive officer/rear commander for the Special Troops Battalion, 101st Sustainment Brigade. In his previous assignment he served as an assistant professor of Military Science at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.
LTC Nalli holds a Master of Science degree in logistics administration from Central Michigan University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in justice studies from Kent State University, Ohio.
His awards and decorations include two Bronze Star Medals, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, four Meritorious Service Medals, Army Commendation Medal with Valor, Army Commendation Medal, five Army Achievement Medals, Iraq Campaign Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with 2 Campaign Stars, two Overseas Medals, NATO Medal, Meritorious Unit Citation, Joint Meritorious Unit Citation, Combat Action Badge, and Air Assault Badge.
LTC Nalli is a native of Monaca, Pennsylvania. He is married and has two children.
