Major General Eric P. Shirley assumed command of the U.S. Army Sustainment Command
on July 10, 2025.
MG Shirley previously served as the commanding general, 1st Theater Sustainment
Command, Fort Knox, Kentucky.
MG Shirley’s assignments include platoon leader and company executive officer, 528th
Quartermaster, assistant S1 (Personnel), 80th Ordnance Battalion and detachment
commander, 81st Quartermaster at Fort Lewis, Washington (1994-1996); III Corps G4
(Logistics) Supply and Services officer; commander, Alpha Company, 704th Division
Support Battalion, 4th Infantry Division and Supply and Services officer, Fort Hood
Texas (1997-2001). He served as the aide-de-camp to the commanding general of the
Army and Air Force Exchange Service, Dallas, Texas, where he deployed to Kuwait and
Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (2001-2003). Following Command and Staff College, he served as the
G4 (Logistics) division logistics planner, 1st Cavalry Division and as Support Operations officer for the division’s 1st
Brigade Combat Team during a 15-month deployment to Iraq in support of OIF (2006-2008). MG Shirley then
served as the professor of Military Science for Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri (2008-2010). He
commanded the 193rd Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, 1st Infantry Division (2010-
2012) and deployed to Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan, with the 1st Infantry Division Headquarters in support of
Operation Enduring Freedom (2012-2013). MG Shirley served as the 8th Theater Sustainment Command’s Support
Operations officer (2014-2016) and commanded the 407th Army Field Support Brigade (2016-2018). He served as
chief of staff of the Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan in Kabul (2018-2019). Upon redeployment,
MG Shirley assumed duties as the executive officer to the deputy chief of staff, G4, Department of the Army. MG
Shirley served as the chief of staff, Operation Warp Speed, Washington D.C. He also served as commander of the
Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support.
His military education includes the Quartermaster Officer Basic Course, the Combined Logistics Officer Advanced
Course, the Command and General Staff Officer Course, the Advanced Military Studies Program, the Army War
College Fellows Program at Stanford University, and the Joint & Combined Warfighting School.
MG Shirley was recognized as a distinguished military graduate from the Army ROTC program at the University of
Arizona in 1993. Upon graduation, he earned a Bachelor of Science in business administration and was
commissioned as a Quartermaster Officer in the United States Army. In 2005, he furthered his military education by
earning a master’s degree in military art and science from the School of Advanced Military Studies at Fort
Leavenworth, Kansas.
MG Shirley’s awards and decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, three Defense Superior Service
Medals, two Legion of Merits, two Bronze Star Medals, five Meritorious Service Medals, the NATO Medal
(w/International Security Assistance Force clasp), two Joint Meritorious Unit Awards, three Meritorious Unit
Citations, the Army Staff Identification Badge, and the Army Parachutist Badge.
He has been inducted as a Distinguished Member of the Regiment and into the Distinguished Order of Saint Martin
for his service in the Quartermaster Corps. He has also been inducted into the Order of Samuel Sharpe. MG Shirley
also possesses the U.S. Department of State’s Meritorious Honor Award and the Polish Defense Minister’s Bronze
Medal for service in Afghanistan.
MG Shirley is a native of Casa Grande, Arizona.
