We Are Army Sustainment Command

Maj. Gen. Eric Shirley, commanding general of U.S. Army Sustainment Command, together with other ASC leaders, virtually briefed Lt. Gen. Chris Mohan, commanding general of Army Materiel Command, on ASC’s broadened role as the Army’s sustainment enterprise, strengthened by the transition of the Joint Munitions Command to ASC. As part of the Army Transformation Initiative, AMC was assigned five major tasks designed to ensure the Army remains the most lethal and ready land force in the world, including streamlining the sustainment structure by consolidating and realigning subordinate headquarters. The integration of ASC and JMC headquarters was a central component of that effort.

Permanent Change of Station moves can be stressful. Being prepared and planning ahead can make the process easier. Robert Smerdon, an Installation Transportation Officer with Logistics Readiness Center Carlisle Barracks offers several tips for those undergoing a move this PCS season. Smerdon is under the U.S. Army Sustainment Command, which handles the logistics of PCS moves for the Army.

During a casing of colors ceremony for the Joint Munitions Command, the organization’s flag draped gracefully from its pole June 10 inside historic Heritage Hall at the Rock Island Arsenal. The colors, first unfurled when JMC became a major subordinate command under the U.S. Army Materiel Command in 2005, carry the insignia that symbolizes the organization’s heritage within the Ordnance Corps and its responsibility for the U.S. Army’s ammunition enterprise.

Across the Indo-Pacific, the U.S. Army is transforming how it manages excess equipment through the Equipment Redistribution Divestiture Site, a theater-level sustainment operation enabling units to convert legacy inventory into combat power. Executed by Army Field Support Battalion–Hawaii, ERDS provides a structured, high-velocity process to remove, redistribute and retrograde excess equipment across the region.

Army Field Support Battalion-Riley and AFSBn-Lewis were recently recognized with the Chief of Staff of the Army’s Deployment Excellence Award for outstanding performance in deployment operations. The award highlights units that set the standard in efficiency, safety, and readiness across the force.

On May 6, cheers and tears filled the Quad Cities International Airport as U.S. Army Sustainment Command Soldiers gave returning veterans the hero’s welcome they deserved. The veterans were returning from a trip to Washington, D.C., where they visited the national war memorials erected in their honor.

The Army’s push for rapid modernization is reshaping logistics operations across installations. At Fort Bliss, Texas, that initiated a major divestiture effort to clear room for an Equipment Redistribution Divestiture Site operation. Designed to support seamless redistribution and turn‑in for units affected by Army structure changes, ERDS accelerates the removal of legacy gear so formations can modernize faster and maintain mission readiness.

Cutting edge technology is helping the Logistics Civil Augmentation Program - known as LOGCAP - perform at the "speed of war," allowing the Army to develop and deliver critical support to warfighters as soon as requirements arise. It is managed by the U.S. Army Sustainment Command, which oversees the logistics and sustainment functions that keep the Army running. From installation services to global support, ASC ensures Soldiers can train, deploy, and operate without interruption.

Army leaders and industry partners say the service is in the midst of a sweeping transformation of how Soldiers are fed on installations, calling the effort long overdue and essential to readiness. Army leaders highlighted the irreversible momentum during a contemporary military forum on “Partnering with Industry to Revolutionize Garrison Feeding.” Senior leaders described the Army’s food modernization push as a radical break from decades of outdated systems, bureaucratic delays and limited dining options that often failed to meet Soldiers’ needs. ASC oversees food operations across 81 installations, including 176 dining facilities.
