Colonel Christopher M. Johnson assumed the duties as commander of the 279th Army Field Support Brigade, Alabama Army National Guard, Huntsville, Alabama, in January 2023.

Previous command assignments include commander of the 1169th Contracting Battalion, commander of Company A, 1st Battalion,131st Armor Regiment, where he commanded Army forces in Pascagoula, Mississippi, during Hurricane Katrina, and team chief, 2nd Kandak (Battalion) (Mechanized), 3rd Infantry Brigade, 201st Regional Corps Advisory Group, Task Force Phoenix, Afghanistan.

After transitioning to the logistics field, he served as a Future Operations planner for the 135th Expeditionary Sustainment Command, chief of Operations for the 402nd Army Field Support Brigade in Balad, Iraq, and executive officer to the deputy chief of staff, G3 (Operations) at Headquarters, U.S. Army Materiel Command. Other key assignments include duty with the 31st Separate Cavalry Troop where he served as an armor platoon leader, scout platoon leader, and executive officer; with 1st Bn, 131st Armor Regt, where he served as battalion motor officer and battalion logistics officer (S4).

COL Johnson graduated from Officer Candidate School and was commissioned as an armor officer in November 1995. He is a graduate of the Armor Officer Basic and Advanced courses, the Combined Arms Services Staff School, the U.S. Army Transportation Officer Transition Course, the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, the U.S. Army Acquisition Intermediate Qualification Course, and the U.S. Army War College. COL Johnson holds a master’s degree in strategic studies from the U.S. Army War College and a Bachelor of Science in production and operations management from the University of Alabama.

Following completion of Command and General Staff College, COL Johnson served as the System Acquisition officer, and later S3 (Operations), 279th AFSB. He deployed to Kuwait with the 135th ESC as an operational contract support officer, and later served as chief, Operational Contract Support for the 1st Theater Sustainment Command. He was also assigned to Headquarters, 167th Theater Sustainment Command as the deputy chief of staff for Plans and Strategy.

COL Johnson’s acquisition assignments include System Acquisition officer, 279th AFSB, and commander, 1169th Contracting Battalion. He is Defense Acquisition Workforce Improvement Act Level III certified in Life-Cycle Logistics and Level II certified in Program Management, and is a member of the Acquisition Corps.

In his civilian career, COL Johnson serves as the senior concepts developer and as a logistics management specialist for Headquarters, AMC. As such, he develops future Army and Joint sustainment concepts, develops organizational and operational concepts and doctrine for AMC organizations, and advises on development and integration of AMC capabilities. COL Johnson’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, three Meritorious Service Medals, four Army Commendation Medals with ‘V’ device, the Combat Action Badge, the Army Achievement Medal, the Meritorious Unit Award, the Army Humanitarian Service Medal, the Bronze Order of Saint George, and the Bronze Order of Saint Martin.
