COL Matthew T. Amsdell

Commander, 402nd Army Field Support Brigade

Colonel Matthew T. Amsdell assumed command of the 402 Army Field Support Brigade, Fort Shafter, Hawaii, Aug. 13, 2025.

COL Amsdell previously served as the assistant chief of staff G3 (Operations) assigned to the 8th Theater Sustainment Command, Fort Shafter, Hawaii.

He entered the Army Reserve as a Motor Transport Operator in 1996. In 2002, he received his commission into the Transportation Corps through ROTC.

Upon graduation from the Officer Basic Course, he was assigned to 10th Transportation Battalion, 7th Transportation Group (Composite) at Fort Eustis, Virginia. His positions included platoon leader and executive officer, 73rd Transportation Company (Floating Craft); liaison officer to U.S. Army South; and battalion assistant Operations officer. After completing the Combined Logistics Captains Career Course in 2006, he was assigned to the 1st Infantry Division as part of a Military Training Team. Following his deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, he was assigned to 65th Engineer Battalion, 130th Engineer Brigade, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, as a Forward Support Company commander. He served in that position from 2008 until relinquishing command in 2010 following another tour in support of OIF. COL Amsdell then served as the Materiel Maintenance Branch chief, 45th Sustainment Brigade, 8th Theater Sustainment Command until 2011. COL Amsdell then was assigned to the University of Vermont as the assistant professor of Military Science where he served until June 2013. Following the completion of the Command and General Staff College, COL Amsdell was assigned to the 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division as the Brigade S4 (Logistics) officer and later served as the Support Operations Officer. During this time, he deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. In 2016 he was assigned to Headquarters, U.S. Army Pacific as a Mobility Operations officer in the Sustainment Branch. Following this he was selected as the secretary of the General Staff, 8th Theater Sustainment Command. COL Amsdell served as the professor of Military Science at Ohio University, Athens, Ohio in 2019 prior to assuming command of the 10th Transportation Battalion (Terminal), 7th Transportation Brigade (Expeditionary), Fort Eustis. He then was assigned as the assistant chief of staff, G4 (Logistics), 10th Mountain Division (Light), Fort Drum, New York.

COL Amsdell’s military education includes the Transportation Officer Basic Course, Combined Logistics Captains Career Course, Command and General Staff College, Senior Service College, Support Operations Course, and Instructors Training Course.

He is a graduate of Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania and earned a Bachelor of Science in social work. He also holds a Master of Arts in management from Webster University and a master’s degree in strategic studies from the U.S. Army War College.

His awards and decorations include eight Meritorious Service Medals, three Army Commendation Medals, Army Achievement Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, National Defense Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Army Overseas Service Ribbon (4th Award), NATO Medal, and Combat Action Badge.

COL Amsdell is a native of Oil City, Pennsylvania. He is married and has two children.
