Colonel Courtney Sugai assumed command of 402nd Army Field Support Brigade headquartered at Fort Shafter, Hawaii, in August 2023.

Prior to her current assignment COL Sugai served as the Logistics Plans chief at the NATO Rapid Deployable Corps-Turkey in Istanbul, Turkey. She is from Lihue, Hawaii.

COL Sugai entered the U.S. Army as a Quartermaster officer in 2001, earning her commission from University of Hawaii at Manoa Army Reserve Officer Training Corps.

Her previous assignments include assistant executive officer to the Commanding General of the U.S. Army Materiel Command at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama; commander, 541st Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 1st Infantry Division Sustainment Brigade at Fort Riley, Kansas; Army legislative liaison at the Office of the Chief Legislative Liaison, Washington, D.C.; battalion executive officer, 87th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, brigade operations officer, 3rd Sustainment Brigade, and deputy chief of operations, 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart, Georgia; Operations officer for U.S. Army Pacific G4 (Logistics) at Fort Shafter, Hawaii; Distribution company commander and battalion logistics officer in 27th Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Bliss, Texas; and general supply officer, company executive officer, and platoon leader in the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

COL Sugai deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in 2002 and 2013, to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from 2003-2004 and 2006-2007, Kuwait in support of Operation Spartan Shield in 2018, and has participated in multiple joint operations and exercises in the Pacific and Europe theaters.

COL Sugai’s military education includes the Quartermaster Officer Basic Course, Combined Logistics Captains Career Course, Command and General Staff College, and Dwight D. Eisenhower School.

Her awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, three Bronze Star Medals, six Meritorious Service Medals, two Army Commendation Medals, two Army Achievement Medals, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary and Service Medals, NATO Medal (International Security Assistance Force), the Parachute Rigger Badge, Parachutist Badge, Air Assault, Pathfinder Badge, and the Army Staff Identification Badge.

COL Sugai also holds a bachelor’s of secondary education from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, a master’s degree in diplomacy and military Studies from Hawaii Pacific University, and a Master of Science in national resource strategy from the Dwight D. Eisenhower School of National Security and Resource Strategy.

COL Sugai is married to retired Lt. Col. Iven Sugai, and they have three sons.
