Sergeant Major LaQuaine Bess assumed duties as the senior enlisted advisor of the Army Field Support Battalion-Cavazos, Fort Cavazos, Texas, on June 3, 2024.

He most recently served as the command sergeant major at the Army Future’s Command Support Battalion in Austin, Texas.

SGM Bess enlisted in the Army in January 1997 and completed basic training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and advance individual training at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama, where he was awarded the military occupational specialty 89B (ammunition specialist).

During his 27 years of active service, SGM Bess has served in several enlisted leadership positions including: 10th Division Special Troops Battalion command sergeant major, Fort Drum, New York; S3 (Operations) sergeant major, Fort Gregg-Adams, Virginia; senior Operations sergeant, Camp Henry, South Korea; Brigade S3 (Operations) sergeant noncommissioned officer, Fort Drum; chief ammunition NCO, Camp Henry; first sergeant, platoon sergeant, Fort Carson, Colorado; senior instructor/writer, Redstone Arsenal, Alabama; drill sergeant, Redstone Arsenal; Advanced Leaders Course small group leader, Redstone Arsenal; instructor/writer, Redstone Arsenal; ammunition sergeant, Miesau, Germany; and section sergeant, Miesau, Germany.

His overseas assignments include Germany, South Korea, and Qatar. SGM Bess served combat deployment tours in Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

SGM Bess’s military education includes all levels of the NCO Professional Development System, culminating with U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy. Bess is also a graduate of the Lean Six Sigma (green belt) course.

His civilian education includes a bachelor’s degree in health education and a master’s degree in human resource management from Trident University International.

SGM Bess’s awards and decorations include three Bronze Star Medals; five Meritorious Service Medals; five Army Commendation Medals; five Army Achievement Medals; eight Good Conduct Medals; National Defense Service Medal; Afghanistan Campaign Medal with two Bronze Stars; Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Korean Defense Service Medals; NCO Professional Development Ribbon (Numeral 5); Army Service Ribbon; Overseas Service Ribbon (Numeral 4); Meritorious Unit Commendation; and the Army Superior Unit Award. His badges include the Combat Action Badge and the Drill Sergeant Badge. He is also a recipient of the Ordnance Order of Samuel Sharp.

SGM Bess is a native of Miami, Florida. He is married and they have three children.
