Master Sergeant Carl R. Nelson assumed the duties as the senior enlisted advisor of the Army Field Support Battalion-Riley in February 2024.

He most recently served in the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, Division Special Troops Battalion, Fort Riley, Kansas. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in March 2003. He completed One Stop Unit Training at Fort Knox, Kentucky, as an Abrams Tank System Maintainer (63A). His current military occupational specialty is a mechanical maintenance supervisor (91Z).

MSG Nelson’s other assignments include: Charlie Combat Support Company, 4th Support Battalion, Fort Cavazos (formerly Fort Hood), Texas; Echo, Forward Support Company, 1st Support Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, Fort Cavazos; Echo, Forward Support Company, 2nd Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, Fort Carson, Colorado; Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment, U.S. Army Garrison-Hohenfels, Germany; Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 2nd Squadron, 11th U.S. Cavalry Regiment, Fort Irwin, California; Abrams Training Division, 194th Armored Brigade, Fort Moore (formerly Fort Benning), Georgia; Ordnance Training Department, 194th Armored Brigade, Fort Moore; Dakota Forward Support Troop, 5th Squadron, 4th U.S. Cavalry Regiment, Fort Riley; and Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 5th Squadron, 4th U.S. Cavalry Regiment, Fort Riley.

His deployments include Operation Iraqi Freedom from 2005-2006 and Operation Enduring Freedom in 2012.

MSG Nelson has held various leadership positions throughout his career: Abrams tank system supervisor, recovery supervisor, instructor/writer, senior student guide leader, training developer, first sergeant, Operations sergeant major, and Operations sergeant.

His military training includes: Basic Leader Course, Advanced Leader Course, Senior Leader Course, Master Leader Course, SHARP Foundation Course, Common Faculty Development Course, Basic Instructor Course, Cadre Training Course, Mobilization and Deployment Course, Equal Opportunity Leaders Course, National Training Center Observer Controller Course, Advanced Vehicle Maintenance Electrical and Hydraulic Troubleshooting Course, Standard Army Maintenance Systems Course, and Maintenance Leaders Course.

MSG Nelson’s awards and decorations include: one Meritorious Service Medal, six Army Commendation Medals, five Army Achievement Medals, seven Good Conduct Medals, the National Defense Service Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal with five campaign stars, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon (Numeral 4), Army Service Ribbon, three Overseas Service Ribbons, Combat Action Badge, and the Driver and Mechanic Badge (Tracked, Wheeled, and Mechanic). MSG Nelson is a recipient of the Order of Samuel Sharpe and Nobel Patron of Armor.

MSG Nelson is married with two children.
